Cold Brew and Iced Coffee at Safeway: A Season-by-Season Guide
Bestsellers for Cold Brew Coffee

Coffee shifts with the season. A hot pour-over in January and a tall cold brew in July come from the same beans, served two different ways. What changes is the method, not the coffee.
Cold brew, iced coffee, and nitro: what's different
The three drinks get called by each other's names, but they're made differently, and the method is what you taste.
Drink | How it's made | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
Iced coffee | Brewed hot the usual way, then cooled and poured over ice | Holds the bright, sharp taste of hot coffee, though melting ice can thin it out |
Cold brew | Coarse grounds steeped in cold water 12 to 24 hours, then filtered | Never heated, which makes it smoother and rounder. Comes ready to drink or as a concentrate |
Nitro cold brew | Cold brew infused with nitrogen under pressure | Nitrogen gives it a creamy, foamy head like a draft stout. Often drinks fine without milk or sugar |
Cold water pulls fewer acids out of the grounds, which is why cold brew tastes rounder and less sharp. That difference is in flavor, not in health.
Concentrate or ready to drink
When you buy cold brew in a bottle, check the label for concentrate or ready-to-drink, because the two are used in different ways.
A concentrate is brewed strong on purpose. You cut it with water or milk until it tastes right, so one bottle turns into many cups. Starbucks sells its cold brew this way in Signature Black, plus flavored versions like Caramel Dolce and Madagascar Vanilla. A ready-to-drink bottle already sits at drinking strength, so you pour it straight over ice. The Stok 48-ounce bottles come ready to drink.
Stok cold brew flavors
Sweetness is the second thing to read. Stok alone spans Not Too Sweet, Extra Bold Unsweetened, Black Unsweetened, and Bright & Mellow, so the label is worth a look.
Cold coffee without the wait
Real cold brew can't be rushed. The long, cold steep is what defines it, and no gadget shrinks that to minutes. For a cold cup today, you have three options that work.
- Pour hot coffee over ice. Brew a cup the usual way and pour it over a full glass of ice. That gives you iced coffee in minutes, brighter and sharper than cold brew.
Flash brew it. Run a pour-over with hot water dripping straight onto ice in the carafe, and swap about a third of your water for that ice. The hot water pulls flavor from the grounds and chills the moment it lands. You get a cup in about five minutes, and it holds the fruity, aromatic notes that a long cold steep loses.
Buy it ready to drink. Pick up a bottle or can of cold brew, nitro, or iced coffee from the refrigerated case. There's no wait.
Roast levels, by taste
Roast is a flavor choice. Pick the one you enjoy and drink it any time of year.
Roast | Looks like | Tastes like |
|---|---|---|
Light | Light brown, dry on the surface | Brighter and fruitier, holding more of the bean's origin character |
Medium | Medium brown, dry | Balanced and rounded, the everyday all-purpose cup |
Dark | Dark brown, often oily | Bold and smoky, with notes of chocolate or toasted nuts |
A dark roast is not "stronger" in caffeine than a light one. Roasting barely changes how much caffeine a bean holds.
What's actually seasonal
There are really only two well known coffee seasons a year one around fall and the other during the holiday season
Fall is pumpkin. Pumpkin spice arrives earlier every year. In 2025 Starbucks brought it back in late August. On grocery shelves it runs as a limited release through the holidays, in ground coffee, cold brew concentrate, and ready-to-drink bottles in the cold case. Because it's a seasonal run, the exact lineup shifts from year to year.
Winter is the holiday blends. Around November, pumpkin steps aside for holiday blends and peppermint, gingerbread, and eggnog flavors. These come as limited releases too, in ground coffee, flavored creamers, and bottled drinks, and they last through the new year.
Spring and summer have no official coffee release the way fall and winter do. Cold brew and iced coffee feel like summer because people want something cold in the heat, not because a brand launches them in June. If you like a light roast in spring, drink it.
FAQ
What cold brew and iced coffee does Safeway carry?
Look in the refrigerated case. Safeway stocks Starbucks cold brew concentrates, both Signature Black and flavored, along with Stok ready-to-drink bottles in several sweetness levels. Stock varies by store, so check your local shelf or safeway.com.
What is cold brew coffee?
It's coarsely ground coffee left to steep in cold water for 12 to 24 hours, then filtered. No heat touches it at any stage, and that's what makes it taste smoother and less sharp than hot coffee.
Can I make cold coffee instantly?
No. Real cold brew needs the long cold steep, and nothing shortcuts that to minutes. For a quick cold cup, pour hot coffee over a glass of ice, or grab a ready-to-drink bottle from the cold case.
What's the difference between cold brew and iced coffee?
Iced coffee is hot-brewed coffee poured over ice. Cold brew is never heated. Iced coffee tastes brighter but can thin out as the ice melts. Cold brew tastes smoother and holds its strength.
Is it okay to drink coffee at night?
That depends on you. Caffeine has a half-life of about four to six hours, so a late-afternoon cup can still leave some in your system at bedtime. Sensitivity varies widely from one person to the next. Some people switch to decaf in the evening, and others sleep fine after a cup.
Can I make my coffee sweeter without sugar?
Yes. Flavored creamers bring sweetness, and a splash of honey or maple syrup does the same. (For help picking a creamer, see the creamer guide.) A flavored cold brew concentrate already comes sweetened, so taste it before you add more.
Can I buy cold brew or bottled iced coffee with EBT?
Yes. Bottled and canned cold coffee sold from the refrigerator case is SNAP eligible, just like a bag of beans. Coffee made to order at a counter is not. See How to buy coffee on SNAP for the full breakdown.
