Safeway Cash is a digital payment option that may be used for purchases online through the Safeway website or app. Safeway Cash is not a legal payment method and can only be used at supported Albertsons Companies, Inc. stores toward your grocery shopping.

There are three ways to accumulate Safeway Cash:

1. Account Credit: any store credit you receive will be issued as Safeway Cash

2. Gift Cards: you can add any physical or electronic Albertsons Companies Gift Card to your Wallet in the Safeway app. When added, Gift Cards are automatically converted into Safeway Cash

3. Loyalty program (including for U^™ and FreshPass): Certain initiatives from our Loyalty program allow the conversion of points to Albertsons Cash. Learn more.

Although Account Credits and Gift Cards do not expire, Loyalty may expire.

You can use Safeway Cash to purchase merchandise only. Safeway Cash is not permitted for non-merchandise purchases (e.g. Gift Cards, money orders/transfers, lottery) or other items as required by law. 

There is one way to pay with Safeway Cash:

• Online: If you have an existing Safeway Cash balance, it will be automatically applied to your next online order

Please check your account before making a purchase. If your Safeway Cash balance is insufficient to complete the purchase, a secondary payment method will be required.

Additionally, when Safeway Cash is used, we will debit the funds in each purse within this tender by this order:

• for U^™ cashback

• Account Credit

• Gift Cards

You can view your Safeway Cash in our app. Simply select Member, then Wallet.

From your Wallet, your current Safeway Cash balance displays. You can also select View balance history for a more detailed list of transactions.

No. Safeway Cash cannot be transferred to another account nor exchanged for cash or other merchandise, except as required by law. If you wish to gift Safeway Cash to someone, you may separately purchase and send an Albertsons Companies, Inc. Gift Card, which can be converted to Safeway Cash in their Wallet.

To add a Gift Card, open our app and visit Member, then select Wallet. The option to 'Add Gift Card' will enable you to take a picture of a physical Gift Card. You can also input the Gift Card information manually.

Gift Cards can be purchased online or in store.

Albertsons Companies, Inc. branded Gift Cards are the only acceptable Gift Cards for Safeway Cash. Any other 3rd party Gift Cards such as restaurants or VISA pre-paid cards are not compatible.

No, you can only transfer the full Gift Card amount to Safeway Cash. Partial amounts cannot be transferred.

Once the original Gift Card funds are transferred to Safeway Cash, the card or digital code (physical or electronic) can no longer be used.

Gift Card balance can be seen in View balance history in your Member > Wallet.

Safeway for U™ cashback is another way we’re rewarding our customers. Cashback can be earned through select Loyalty program partnerships and incentives and can be used towards online transactions.

You can earn for U™ cashback through select Loyalty programs, when eligible. This includes but is not limited to partnerships and incentives; digital offers; manufacturer rebates; and/or other programs.

Expedia Partnership:

• Safeway for U™ members and FreshPass trial and paid monthly subscribers:

  • Safeway for U™ cashback earned through Expedia expires at the end of the month, 12 months after it was awarded. 

• For paid FreshPass annual subscribers:

  • Safeway for U™ cashback earned through Expedia does not expire, provided the paid annual subscription was active when travel was completed.

Yes, you can use earned for U™ cashback and redeem Points during the same transaction at Safeway stores.
