Safeway respects the privacy of our customers. We take steps to ensure that your privacy is respected and protected when collecting and using information you provide.

Data Collection

Safeway only collects personally-identifying information from customers when customers apply for a Safeway Club Card; enter sweepstakes or other contests when using your Club Card or other means of entry; visit our web site -- www.safeway.com; and purchase groceries or other items with a method of payment that contains personally-identifying information. "Personally-identifying information" means your name, address, bank account, credit card number, telephone number or other information by which you can be personally identified.

Safeway does collect additional information from Safeway Club Card members. The information we receive depends on what you do when you visit our stores and use your card. We collect and store your name, address, home telephone number, and birth date if provided by you. If you are in an area where we offer electronic checking and apply for this service, we also ask for information such as your driver’s license number and bank and credit card account numbers. When you make purchases, we record data about the transaction, including the amount and content of your purchases and the time and place these purchases are made.

In addition, Safeway.com receives a confirmation when you open e-mail from us if your computer supports such capabilities. We may at times compare our customer list to lists received from other companies, in an effort to avoid sending unnecessary messages to our customers.

Safeway/VONS.com works with Yahoo! to research certain usage and activities on our web site on our behalf. Yahoo! uses web beacons to conduct this research. The information collected through these web beacons is used to find out more about our users, including user demographics and usage patterns, for more accurate reporting, and to improve the effectiveness of our marketing. Information recorded through the use of these web beacons is aggregated and then shared with us. No personally identifiable information about you is shared by Yahoo! with Safeway/VONS.com as a result of this research. The Yahoo! privacy policy is separate and apart from Safeway’s privacy policy and may treat your personal information in ways which are different than the SBCIS policy. Please consult the Yahoo! privacy policy if you wish to limit use of your personal information by Yahoo!. Data Use

Safeway uses personally-identifying information in limited circumstances. For example, we use your name to thank you personally for your business when you make purchases. We may share information with affiliated companies or third parties as necessary to fulfill your on-line grocery order or other requests for service, and as necessary to obtain payment for products and services we may offer. (Third parties with whom we share information to assist in completing orders do not have the right to use personal information provided to them beyond what is necessary to complete the order.) We also use this information to contact you if you have won a contest or sweepstakes. Safeway may use this information to give you personally-tailored coupons, offers or other information which may be provided to Safeway by other companies. If you prefer not to receive these value-added services or offers, let us know on your Club Card application or by contacting our Club Card customer service.

Safeway does not sell or lease personally-identifying information to any other non-affiliated company, person or agency. Safeway will disclose personally-identifying information only if required to do so by law, or if requested to do so by a law enforcement agency in the context of an ongoing criminal investigation where such disclosure could be required by subpoena, search warrant or court order. Such request for information must be cleared by our Legal Department. In addition, Safeway may use any information our customers provide when conducting our own investigations of alleged customer wrongdoing, such as dishonored or fraudulent method of payment.

Safeway may create compilations of information that is not personally-identifying and provide this data to other companies or entities to help them understand the shopping patterns of our customers.

Security

We provide protection against unauthorized disclosure of the information you share with us. We store information in a secure manner. We restrict access to personally identifying information to only those with a need to know. We also educate those people with access to customer information about their responsibility to protect your privacy and we give them clear guidelines regarding the use and disclosure of such information.
