At Safeway, we believe that Corporate Social Responsibility is imperative to good business. That's why we invest in programs designed to reduce our environmental impact in building design, transportation, greenhouse gases, recycling, product development, packaging, and reusable bags. This store exemplifies our commitment to our planet and our communities. The green elements listed below are an example of what Safeway has done company wide to make our stores greener.

Recycling & Water Stream Reduction
This store diverts waste from landfills through extensive recycling and composting.
Advanced Energy Management Systems
Refrigeration, A/C and lighting systems are all controlled through programmable microprocessor-based computers.
Walk-In Cooler Door Alarm
For a substantial reduction in energy consumption, we use smart alarms on all walk-in coller doors to alert employees if the door has not been fully closed.
Alternative Transportation
Bicycle storage is provided for employee use at this store to encourage use of alternative transportation and promote healthy living.
Occupancy Sensors
We use occupancy sensors in all storage rooms, break rooms, offices, bathrooms, stockrooms and receiving areas to ensure lights are not left on in unoccupied spaces.

A Greener Store
We worked to certify our sustainable building and development practices when designing and constructing this store. The result is a greener store that benefits the entire community.
Recycling & Construction
More than 75% of debris from store demolition and construction was recycled and kept out of local landfills.
Drainage System
Bio-retention swales, storm water planters and pervious concrete used throughout the project site allows storm water to infiltrate the ground to reduce pollutant run-off.
LED Exterior Lighting
LED lights have a longer life and reduced energy consumption by up to 80% compared to standard neon signs and garage lighting.
Pedestrian-Friendly
This store is designed for easy pedestrian access with close proximity to public transportation.

No CFC Refrigerants
Safeway has been using a zero ozone depletion refrigerant (R-507) in our systems since 1995.
Protocol-distributed Refrigeration Systems
This system reduces the amount of copper piping by almost 35%. It also reduces the amount of refrigerant used, and helps minimize potential refrigerant leaks.
Centralized HVAC System
The heating and cooling system installed in this store is high efficiency and has zero ozone depletion potential.
Water Efficient Landscaping
We've selected drought tolerant native plants that require little or no irrigation.
Exterior Light Filtration Reduction
Exterior lighting was designed to minimize light "pollution" into neighboring areas.
"Heat Island" Reduction
White "TPO" roofing membrane and the use of 100% concrete pavement reduces heat build-up and decreases cooling requirements for the store.

Low VOC Materials
To help reduce the release of pollutants, low VOC materials were used for store adhesives, paints, finishes, and flooring.
LED Refrigerated Case Lighting
LED lighting reduces energy consumption up to 63% compared to fluorescent lighting.
Zero-Energy Frozen Food Doors
Because our doors do not require electrcity for de-fogging, we save electricity and cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing store CO2 usage by 135,655 lbs. per year.
Low-Flow Water Fixtures
Compared to standard bathroom fixtures, low-flow fixtures use less water.

Energy Star Rated Equipment
We've installed Energy Star qualified equipment to maximize energy efficiency.
Energy Efficient Lighting
Our store lighting uses only 1.1 watts of electricity per square foot, one of the best efficiency ratings in the industry.
Energy Efficient Coils & Fans
Used throughout the store in all our cold cases, these coils and fans increase our energy efficiency and reduce our overall electrical consumption.
Green Power
We are one of the largest retail purchases of renewable energy in the U.S. Wind generated power is used for our fuel stations and corporate offices.
