Holiday Party Tips
What are some tips to help prevent overeating at holiday parties?
We know how easy it is to overeat when faced with an array of tempting choices–we've been there, too!
But you can enjoy party goodies without overdoing it. Here are some tips that work for us:
Eat regular, but lighter, meals during the day. Don't skip meals all day to "save" your calories for the party–you might get so hungry, you'll lose control.
If party time is close to dinner time, replace dinner with a light snack to take the edge off your hunger before you leave home. Some ideas: a piece of whole–wheat toast with a slice of reduced–fat cheese, a few whole–grain crackers with 1/4 cup of hummus, or a small bowl of oatmeal.
Be choosy about party foods. Skip foods like chips and pretzels that you can get any day, and savor small portions of special holiday foods. One exception: it's smart to fill up on low–calorie offerings from the raw veggie platter.
Stay aware of what you drink. Eggnog, punch, regular soft drinks and alcoholic beverages contribute calories. Enjoy one glass, then switch to calorie–free flavored sparkling water or diet soft drinks.
Remain on the move. Rove through the crowd (and away from the buffet) to mix and mingle. Be the first–and last–person on the dance floor. The next day, take an extra–long walk or hit the health club for an extra workout.
