investing in the community
Safeway believes in building a stronger and better community and one way we accomplish that is through our philanthropy to the neighborhoods we serve. In 2008, donations exceeded $172 million nationally with $11 million contributed in the Mid-Atlantic region. The primary beneficiaries can be broken into three areas of need: education, hunger relief, and health/human services including cancer awareness and prevention. In the District of Columbia, Safeway donated thousands of dollars to charitable organizations in an effort to build a stronger community.

our commitment
Safeway's commitment to a sustainable future makes us a leader in the industry.

Safeway strongly supports green building and development efforts. Safeway's corporate construction and design department has developed a sustainable construction process using the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED portfolio program as a benchmark for improving the environmental footprint of its stores.

Safeway will be seeking LEED certification for the new Tenleytown store.

As a result of these initiatives and the ongoing focus in this area, benefits have been realized in reduced energy usage and product waste. The Company has continued retrofitting its stores with energy-efficient lighting and heating systems to conserve energy. Whether it is recycling plastic bags to make decking material or converting its truck fleet to biodiesel fuel, the overall goal is to reduce the impact on the environment. All of our stores encourage cardboard and bag recycling as well as using renewable energy such as wind and solar to power our operations.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Safeway is one of the largest retail users of renewable energy in the United States. The Company has completed 14 solar projects in California and 9 new projects are under development, which will help remove more than 10 million pounds of carbon dioxide from the air. By harnessing the power of renewable wind energy, Safeway has reduced its carbon footprint by more than 142 million pounds of CO2.
