The Safeway Classic is a premiere LPGA golf tournament ripe with tradition and a sense of mission. The tournament began in 1972, with a dream of bringing world class ladies golf to Portland, while raising money for local children’s charities at the same time. After 33 years, the Safeway Classic is the oldest LPGA event on tour and has raised over $8 million to benefit a variety of children’s charities in the region.

Tournament Golf Foundation (TGFI) is the non-profit organizer of the tournament. TGFI is responsible for the operation of both The Safeway Classic in Portland and The Safeway International in Phoenix, AZ. TGFI is comprised of 47 Portland area volunteer business leaders and their spouses.

Safeway has been a part of the Portland LPGA tournament since 1989 and has proudly served as Title Sponsor since 1997. During the past seven (7) years, the Safeway Classic has raised over $4.1 Million Dollars for local children’s charities.

The list of past LPGA Champions is like a Who’s-Who of LPGA Hall of Fame members.
Kathy Whitworth, Nancy Lopez, Donna Caponi, JoAnne Carner, Amy Alcott, Betsy King, Patty Sheehan and Annika Sorenstam are just a few of the top women golfers who have earned this prestigious title.

The 2004 Safeway Classic will be held at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland
from September 13-19. Annika Sorenstam has won the tournament the past two years and will return this year to defend her title. The field for last year’s tournament was one of the strongest on tour and 2004 promises to be much the same.
